FAQ

Medical IDs

A Medical ID is a bracelet or necklace that displays the universally recognized Star-of-Life symbol.  A Medical ID may potentially save your life as this symbol alerts first responders and medical professionals to your important health information. Med ID Pro will work with you to custom engrave your medical conditions, drug and food allergies, prescribed medications, and emergency contacts onto the surface of your Medical ID bracelet or necklace.

Recent surveys of emergency medical personnel indicate that over 95% of these professionals look for a Medical ID on a patient when providing emergency medical treatment.  The health information engraved on a Medical ID will very often provide critical, life-saving details about a patient’s medical conditions.

You should always wear your Medical ID.  Medical emergencies are most often unexpected and can happen at any time.  If you are not wearing your Medical ID, medical personnel will not have your important health information that will allow them to give you the correct medical treatment.

Physicians, paramedics, emergency rescue personnel, and healthcare organizations recommend Medical IDs because a Medical ID provides them with important information about your health conditions.

Med ID Pro uses the highest quality stainless steel materials for its Medical IDs.  Stainless steel is a highly durable metal alloy that provides superior protection against rust and corrosion.  The stainless steel material that we use is highly polished, low maintenance, and scratch resistant.  The ID tag that displays your important medical information is manufactured from Type 316 grade stainless steel.  This particular type of stainless steel is often used in marine grade applications and offers enhanced corrosion resistance against salt water and chlorine.  This allows you to wear your Medical ID worry free at the beach or in the pool.  Note that many of our competitors use a lower grade stainless steel that does not provide equivalent corrosion resistance as the Type 316 stainless steel offered by Med ID Pro.

Your Medical ID is made from highly durable stainless steel materials that require very little routine care.  You may use a jewelers polishing cloth or household stainless steel polish to gently polish your Medical ID.  This will help to remove minor scratches caused by normal wear and to restore the natural luster to the stainless steel.  You should also periodically examine the clasp and the links of your Medical ID to ensure that all are in good condition and functioning properly.

Engraving a Medical ID

Your Medical ID should be engraved with health information that would be important to medical personnel in the event of an emergency. The information typically includes medical conditions, prescription medications, and allergies (i.e. food, medication, insect). In addition, medical professionals typically recommend that Alzheimer’s patients engrave their name and address or the contact information of their caregiver on their Medical ID. As the available space for engraving is limited, you should use short, descriptive words where possible and prioritize the most important medical information for the engraving on your Medical ID. We recommend discussing your choice of engraving information with your doctor to ensure that your Medical ID will communicate effectively to medical personnel in the event of an emergency.

Yes. An allergic reaction to medication, food, or insects can cause serious medical problems. A Medical ID immediately informs medical personnel of your allergy which will allow them to quickly treat you to stop the allergic reaction.

While medications, medical conditions, and allergies are the most common information engraved on a Medical ID, other important information can also be engraved. Some common examples are as follows:

  • Advance Directives (i.e. DNR – Do Not Resuscitate)
  • Living Will
  • Organ Donor
  • Blood Type
  • Contact Lenses
  • Pacemaker
  • Emergency Contact (i.e. Next of Kin, Caregiver, etc.)
  • See Wallet Card (Additional Medical Information)

Consult your doctor if you are not sure about what to engrave on your Medical ID or if you need assistance regarding how to phrase a specific medical condition.

If space allows, medical professionals often recommend engraving your first name on your Medical ID.  This allows emergency personnel to use your name if you are incoherent, unconscious, or in a diabetic coma.  Medical professionals also recommend that Alzheimer’s patients engrave their name and address or the contact information of their caregiver on their Medical ID.
